Have you ever seen something small and dark darting by from the corner of your eye, only when you turn to look, there's nothing there?  Have you ever seen a human shaped shadow standing and looking at you from the hallway or by your bed?  Have you ever seen a shadow that looks like it's wearing a robe or a hat?  Or has your particular shadow ghost been described as misty, without any real shape?

What are shadow ghosts?

They have been seen and experienced by many people, under differing circumstances.  They are believed to be a type of ghost that is different from "grey" or "white" ghosts.  What they are is the subject of debate, and unlike typical ghosts and spirits, no one has found out what their purposes truly are.  They are in a class by themselves, and there seem to be several subclasses of them.

Type I Shadow Ghost

The first type of shadow ghost is small, and has been described as "rat-sized", "cat-sized" or even "small dog-sized".  They seem to try to avoid detection, as they are usually seen from the corners of the eyes as they dart swiftly by.  They are generally considered harmless, and there have been no reported cases of aggression or attack from them.  There are usually more than one present in any given haunting.

Type II Shadow Ghost

This type of ghost can be small or large, but is generally described as being "misty" or "sheetlike" in appearance.  They can be as tall as a person, and twice as wide, with "undulating" or "wispy" edges.  Or they can be the size of a basketball, a misty patch floating through a house.  They can sometimes be associated with feelings of fear, but not always.  They are also sometimes associated with "sleep paralysis" experiences.  Some reports of sleep paralysis include the presence of a "dark mist" which seems to cause the paralysis.  Usually when the mist leaves, the paralysis breaks shortly thereafter.

Type III Shadow Ghosts

This type of ghost is human shaped.  It can have differing characteristics from experience to experience.  There seem to be three distinct kinds of human shaped shadow ghosts:

Human shaped without features

Human shaped with clothing

Human shaped with a robe

The ones that seem to have clothing are most often described as wearing hats.  The robed ones are most commonly described as being "like a Grim Reaper".  Most often, this type of apparition is described as being "flat black", "blacker than black", or as "having no dimension", as though they were really a flat shadow standing free from the ground or the wall.  They are usually featureless, but sometimes described as having red eyes.  They are normally seen standing and staring at you, whether from across the street, across the room, or next to your bed.  Very often these types of ghosts are associated with feelings of fear, threat, or danger.  In some cases, people have been touched by them, and this experience is usually described as unpleasant.

A good example of a Type III shadow ghost, typically displaying signs of obvious clothing, such as a hat and coat.   Closer look at this apparition.  How is it he can be so dark, and there is such absence of detail, in such bright sunlight?
